Angel Oak Tree

I have a bucket list of places to go and things to see while I live in Charleston. I have been consistently checking things off (and adding new things on) since moving here. This past weekend, I finally went to see the Angel Oak Tree.

The Angel Oak Tree is a live oak on Johns Island. At more than 1500 years old, it is thought to be among the oldest living things in the United States of America. It stands 66 1/2 feet tall, measures 28 feet in circumference, and produces shade that covers 17,200 square feet. From tip to tip its longest branch distance is 187 feet. This thing is crazy. And beautiful (as all live oaks are).

The drive out to see it was MUCH longer than the time we spent actually looking at the Angel Oak, but it was well worth it. If you’re ever in Charleston, I would recommend taking some time to go see this beautiful tree.

  1. WOW! This oak tree is *magnificent*! I’m currently doing a project celebrating change and cycles with an old oak tree that graces my view. I absolutely LOVE trees and this ancient angel oak looks positively magical. Will have to put this on my bucket list when I return to the States one day. Love and best wishes from the Overberg, Bx
